I’m a layman in programming.  The link through which I found this software said this was a web-based program.  What am I missing?  I’ve downloaded the files, now what do I do to get it running?  Can’t find the exe to start the install.

What you’ve got is the source code of Tracks. You have three options:
* install it on your own machine. This requires technical knowledge. You can find an installation manual on the website: http://getontracks.org/doc/index.html
* use a webhost to install and run tracks. There are some links on the home page and in the wiki
* is a hosted Tracks. There are several mentioned here: http://getontracks.org/wiki/Tracks-Hosting/

Hi Mate,

Just had your issue.

ie ‘What the hell! This things looks complicated. Where is the exe?’

You could do the above…

Alternatively, I suggest you do as I did, and forget about the stuff you just downloaded from the tracks website, and instead download a complete install pack from the link below that includes that, as well as all the ruby on rails, database etc etc already built in, and hence just needs a one click install (which is a bit more like it for the technically challenged amongst us grin):

http://bitnami.org/stack/tracks

The version for windows is this one at the moment:

http://bitnami.org/files/stacks/tracks/bitnami-tracks-1.7rc2-1-windows-installer.exe

I have just installed it and it works fine.

Their are also MAC versions on the page above, in case you are searching the forum (like I did) for what you do next and happen upon this post.

This installs it on your own PC. So if you need to have it on the web so you can see it at work, on the move etc. Then you will have to do all the webhost stuff suggested above.

Personally, I don’t like the idea of every thought I have being on the web, so I prefer to run this locally (which the installer above does great)

Takes ages to install though. So I dread to think how long it would take to install this stuff separately…

I too use the Bitnami distribution found here:
http://bitnami.org/stack/tracks
It’s wonderful! I wouldn’t have had the patience to get the thing set up myself. Good luck!
